One thread, both head termsThe r/devops thread “What secret management tool do you use?” (20 up / 33 comments, July 2025) holds #1 on secrets management tool and best secrets management tool. It is archived, so nobody can add to it. It beat older, bigger threads on the same question, including “What secrets managers are y’all using?” (212 comments, Infisical in 1 of the 157 we read). The way into that slot is a newer thread good enough to replace it.

Infisical’s own pages are on page one for 14 of the 24 searches and in the top 3 for 9. The alternatives posts do the work: #1 for doppler alternative, #2 for aws secrets manager alternative and hashicorp vault pricing, #3 for hashicorp vault alternative and akeyless alternative. Two threads stopped at a 20-page comment cap (85 of 102 and 140 of 175 comments read), so the counts there are a floor.

Reddit archives threads after six months unless a sub turns that off, and an archived thread takes no new comments. Infisical is absent from 7 of the 10 open threads. The only way into an archived slot is a newer thread good enough for Google to rank instead.

How I got my homelab to a fully declarative state with Terraform + Komodo + Gitea + Infisical
A user’s own build post, Infisical in the title.

Users bring Infisical up unprompted in the newest threads. The team doesn’t need to start these conversations. It needs to be in them with something more useful than a link.

Two big live threads are about .env files but aren’t buying conversations: r/sysadmin “A senior dev overwrote .env and took down website” (779 / 236) and r/SaaS “Someone is trying really hard to get the .env file!” (2,271 / 317). No secrets manager is named in the 121 and 172 comments we read. A practice answer fits there; a product pitch would not.

The AI Overviews leave Infisical out the same way: open source pki (EJBCA, step-ca, OpenXPKI, Dogtag, XiPKI, cert-manager, Boulder), internal certificate authority (AD CS, step-ca, SecureW2), openbao vs vault, secrets management for ai agents, and dynamic secrets, which names Vault and Akeyless while citing Infisical’s own docs page. PKI, Agent Vault, dynamic secrets, the Kubernetes operator and Radar don’t show up when a buyer asks about the job.

One Reddit comment, quoted by GoogleOn aws secrets manager alternative, the AI Overview’s Infisical line (“open-source, developer-centric… self-hosted for free or run via their managed cloud”) is attributed to r/aws plus two other sources. The only Infisical mention in that thread is one comment from February 2026, scored 1, in a thread from 2018.

What we’d do. Open ranking threads first, then the live ones.

First · open threads that rank without you

  5. r/selfhosted: OpenBao vs HashiCorp Vault ?openbao vs vault · Reddit #2 · state the MIT core / ee/ split and link the license
  6. r/devsecops and r/AZUREbest secret scanning tool #2 · secret rotation tool #4 · only with a free scanning path or an Azure rotation integration worth naming

After that · a new thread for the archived slots

  1. A customer’s own migration write-up, off Vault or Doppler, with what they lost as well as what they gained, posted from their account.secrets management tool #1 · hashicorp vault alternative #2 · both held by archived r/devops threads
  2. Not a vendor post in r/devops. It will be removed or downvoted.
  3. Re-measure in ninety days: the same 24 searches, the same 12 questions, the same thread list.

Each answer describes the setup, not the product. Two or three threads a week at most, from an account with history. Stay out of the r/netsec “Critical RCE Alert: Full takeover of HashiCorp Vault and OpenBao” thread (2026-09-29), and keep product links out of the r/sysadmin and r/SaaS .env story threads. The accurate wording is “MIT core, with ee/ under a separate license”, never “fully open source” or “not open source”.

Method. 24 buying searches on live US Google, desktop, one pull on 2026-10-12. Reddit threads read directly, up to 20 pages of comments each, 119 threads in all. 12 questions to Claude and ChatGPT, one sample each, answered from memory with no web search. Not included: search volume and traffic. “Open” is Reddit’s archived flag; check each thread by hand before posting, since a thread can also be locked or removed.
